What I find especially inspiring is the diversity of ways in which members contribute - whether as clinicians, individuals with a personal or family history of cancer, service directors, researchers, or often wearing several of these hats at once. It’s truly beautiful to witness the collective effort - how each person’s unique strengths and contributions come together to create something greater than the sum of its parts." "My most impactful experience with CAPO was participating in the CAPO Webinar Series titled “How Can Research Culture Adapt to Engage Patients and Caregiver Partners More Effectively in the Future?” During this event, I received invaluable feedback and guidance on my PhD research, which I anticipate will play a crucial role in shaping my career as a researcher." "CAPO has connected me to researchers and clinicians across Canada who are similarly committed to preventing cancer and improving patient care." "I was fortunate to be able to attend CAPO 2022 from CPAC sponsorship. I loved seeing all the amazing research that is being done for patients. From this experience I connected with a researcher and have been asked to contribute to many research projects, which has led to great collaborations and insightful work in the young adult cancer space. This would not have been possible without CAPO! Now I am a part of the advocacy committee, which promotes psychosocial oncology work in Canada and has been great getting to know clinicians and other people with lived experience!" | "My most meaningful CAPO experience was the first time I attended, in 1998, in Thunder Bay. I immediately felt part of a supportive community of likeminded people in a casual, fun environment. It kept me coming back year after year!" "I was diagnosed with a variant of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in the fall of 2015. After six months of chemotherapy at the QEH Cancer Clinic in PEI I was told that I was now “free of any clinical signs” of cancer. Nevertheless, I would be followed up by my oncologist every few months to check to see whether the cancer had returned. The entire time I was undergoing treatment, I imagined what it would be like when my treatment was over and I was “cured.” I didn’t imagine that the psychological effects of having had cancer and worrying that it might come back would come to dominate my life. This is why attending the CAPO annual conference in 2019 was so helpful. There I learned that most if not all cancer patients experience the same issues. Knowing that I was not alone with this fear and that there were people who could help came as an immense relief. This was my most meaningful CAPO experience." "My most meaningful CAPO experience was listening to a keynote lecture on Caring for the Soul in Cancer at CAPO 2025 and realizing that psychosocial oncology is my professional home and CAPO is my family. Marking its 40th birthday this year, my CAPO family includes remarkable parents, wonderful siblings and I'm now even old enough to have amazing children." "CAPO has connected me to a vibrant community of clinicians and researchers committed to advancing psychosocial care for Canadians of all ages affected by cancer." "Belonging to CAPO throughout my training and into my career has allowed me to make valuable connections with psychosocial-oncology clinicians and researchers across Canada. CAPO's community is welcoming and supportive, and works together to support patients and families impacted by cancer. It is also always fun to attend the annual conference and reconnect with colleagues across the country!" ![]() "A wonderful place to connect and learn from others working in supportive care and/or psychosocial oncology!" "What I bring to CAPO is passion to advocate for expanded access to psychosocial supports for oncology patients and their loved ones, even during the diagnosis." |
